oh wow and oh no. My imagination is running wild right now. It's a great piece, i love the 'see-through-ness' of the fish-beast the deeper down it is; i'd imagine such a camouflage would ensure it grew fat and healthy and perhaps... even bigger *shudders*. I'd freeze in shock and fear if i ever saw something like this happen.
One of the things which, I think, adds such realism to this is the color gradients which give a sense of looking through a space of water. Add to this the centered composition and contrast with the white, snow-bound surface, and this is sharply an eye-catcher. Also, if that thing evolved to be a threat to anything walking the ice, that would mean there was other life up there...
That's amazing, and it's all been said- I can only nod in appreciation. Well deserved DD. The only thing about this piece I'm slightly disappointed by is that I'd wish the creature to be more... alien, less earthfish-like, but that's just being super-picky. Fantastic piece of artwork.
Since no one knows for certain what aliens actually look like (or if they even exist), who's to say there aren't very similar creatures to our own on other planets? I personally like alien beasts that look familiar or same to creatures that already exist on Earth, or have existed. But you are right, it's a well deserved DD and a beautiful piece!
